Sunshine Valley, Minnesota librarian Karen Nash stays at the London B&B owned by her boyfriend Caldwell Perkins while deciding whether to relocate here as they discuss opening a bookshop together; partially financed by his selling the bed and breakfast. However, to Caldwell’s chagrin, Karen’s shock and housekeeper Brenda’s jubilation; Perkin’s former lover and ex-B&B partner Sally Burroughs, accompanied by her lover Alfredo Remuledo, arrives to claim her share. Seven years ago, she took all their money and abandoned Caldwell underfunded to deal with the B&B. Sally’s sister Penelope Winters and book collector Bruce are also in residence.

That night in the library, a bookcase falls on top of Sally, killing her. Inspector Blunderstone leads the official investigation in which Caldwell is the prime suspect though Karen, Penelope and Alfredo have strong motives. Determined to prove her lover is innocent, Karen asks questions of those staying at the B&B trying to learn why the victim was in the library a place Sally allegedly hated.

The latest Librarian Mystery (see Killer Librarian) is a fun cozy with a solid lead protagonist and a fine late twisting motive. Although the support cast besides Caldwell is underdeveloped and the final denouement gathering doubtful as the cop has no reason to depend on the American, fans will enjoy the librarian’s soft amateur sleuthing.
